“My first visit to Bosön was a powerful experience. It’s a legendary place steeped in history. Today, I’m part of that history myself, largely thanks to the physics lab, which always challenges me—to measure is to know.”

Did you know that Pelé lived at Bosön? Or that Paul U Bergström, the founder of the PUB department store, considered Bosön his summer paradise before the Swedish Sports Confederation moved there? He lived here at the turn of the century and had today’s Mästarvillan built in the 1920s. The Swedish Sports Confederation purchased the property in 1938.

The first course was held at Bosön in 1939—a cycling course for coaches and athletes. During World War II, several of the farms on Lidingö were requisitioned by the military. Bosön housed an eavesdropping station where, among other things, German Krypton codes were cracked during the Winter War. Askrikefjärden was home to a torpedo-firing range.

After the war in the 1940s, Bosön was expanded. That’s when the indoor sports hall, the swimming pool, and the outdoor track and field facility were added. During the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, intensive training took place there. Many—if not all—Swedish male and female national-team-level athletes visited Bosön one or more times during their careers.

In 1958, Sweden hosted the World Cup, and Bosön served as the training camp for the future world champions, Brazil, whose roster included Pelé—then unknown but later a very well-known World Cup player. A friendly international match between Sweden and Brazil was also played at Bosön—a game that many Lidingö residents fondly remember today, with many autographs still preserved.
