Sports Leadership and Management Program

The sports leadership and management program (ILM) is the most advanced educational program in the sports sector for those who are managers or elected officials. It is a customized program designed for individuals who have strategic operational responsibility and lead others.

Leadership in a complex world

As a manager or leader, you constantly face new challenges, and the demands placed on you are becoming increasingly complex. The program focuses on leadership at the organizational, group, and individual levels. Drawing on research and proven experience, you will have the opportunity to test, reevaluate, and develop your practical approach to leadership and management.

Meet everyone from researchers and the smiling prison warden Jeaque Nuwpe from Kumla prison to Anja Pärsson, an Olympic alpine skiing medalist, who talks about becoming the best version of yourself. New for 2026/27 is a track running throughout the entire program where you’ll build your own leadership agent (AI) to use in your day-to-day work, both during and after the program.

Purpose

The goal is to address the unique circumstances and challenges faced by leaders in the nonprofit sector. Upon completion of the program, you will have developed a number of the skills required to lead an organization guided by ideals and values, and you will know how to navigate various contexts.

Who is this program for?

This program is designed for those who, in their work or role, lead others in some capacity. You must have strategic operational responsibility; the people you lead may be employees, volunteers, or a mix of both. This may involve or not involve personnel responsibility.

This training program is the most advanced offered by the Swedish sports confederation. The number of participants is limited to 20 to ensure that all participants receive the attention they need and to maintain the highest quality.

Here's what you'll get

  • Tools for strategic leadership in which a systemic approach embeds knowledge and readiness to act within the organization and its culture.
  • Insightful perspectives on what is required for successful leadership, management, and development.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to become and remain an attractive and modern sports organization.
  • An understanding of uniqueness and added value, as well as how the relationship between assignments, activities, and resources can be utilized both strategically and operationally.
  • Self-awareness and tools for understanding your own behavior and its impact on others.
  • Exchanges of knowledge and experience with managers and leaders in similar positions.

Admission requirements and prerequisites

The program is designed for those of you who hold strategic leadership roles in which you lead others—such as secretaries-general, development directors, or chairpersons. The primary target audience is national-level executives or elected officials. You lead employees, volunteers, or a mix of both, without necessarily having formal personnel responsibility.

As part of the program, we use a standardized feedback form in which the people you lead provide you with feedback on your leadership style. A prerequisite for participation is therefore that your leadership influences at least four people.

Application

In addition to being part of the target group, motivation, full attendance, and active participation are key requirements for enrollment. We strive for a diverse group of participants and will conduct personal interviews with all applicants after the application deadline in preparation for the program. We have space for a maximum of 20 participants. Registration is binding, and full payment is due 6 weeks before the course begins. This applies provided that you are accepted into the program.

To complete your application, you'll need to fill out a questionnaire that will be included in the confirmation email you receive when you apply.

Additional Information

The program takes place at the Bosön development center in four sessions totaling 10 days—see dates. In addition, participants will need to complete preparatory and follow-up work at home equivalent to approximately 4 workdays.

The third stage coincides with the sports leadership symposium, which will thus become part of your personal ILM program.

Cancellations made less than 6 weeks before the start of the course will be charged the full fee. A doctor's note is required in case of illness.

Sports leadership symposium

Employers in sports—roles, responsibilities, and the courage to build the workplace of the future: that is the theme for 2026. Do you want to become a better employer where people feel comfortable, thrive, and perform at their best? Just like athletes, managers also need to train to improve and grow—in their leadership, in their role as employers, and as fellow human beings.

Ahmed Berhan ( host of the TV show *immigrants for Swedes*, among other things) will open the event with a reflection on Swedish leadership and cultural differences. Anja Pärson, Olympic gold medalist, will give an inspirational talk on the courage to become the best version of myself. The day will then continue with a panel discussion, workshops, reflection, and hands-on sessions. This year’s leadership symposium is being held in collaboration with the employers’ alliance.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide a forum for leaders and managers to learn about current research and to pool their resources to address the challenges and opportunities of leadership. Theory and practice are combined so that participants can quickly apply what they learn in their daily work.

Who is the symposium for?

The leadership symposium is aimed at those in leadership positions—whether as elected officials, managers, executive directors, or others with strategic responsibilities. The symposium addresses current issues in leadership and organization within civil society, with a particular focus on sports. The goal is to strengthen managers and leaders within the sports movement.

Here's what you'll get

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding employment.
  • Insight into how to foster a clear sense of accountability and create sustainable work environments.
  • Sharing experiences with others in similar positions and situations.
  • Different perspectives on what is required for the successful leadership, management, and development of nonprofit organizations.
  • Expands your network.

Chairpersons' network 2026

The network provides a dedicated space for chairs within the Swedish sports movement to engage in joint professional development through new knowledge, reflection, and the exchange of experiences regarding leadership and organization.

Purpose

The goal is to strengthen individuals in their leadership and in their role as board chair.

Who is this program for?

Here's what you'll get

The starting point for the network is leadership. Purely operational issues are addressed in other contexts. Sports-related issues may serve as a starting point for discussion, but only from the perspective of leadership and organization. Themes are selected by mutual agreement between the network and the process facilitator.

The network will meet three times in 2026; there will be no meeting in November/December due to the national sports forum.  There is a mutual duty of confidentiality within the network, which means that what is discussed in the room stays there. The network meetings are led by Johanna S:t Clair Renard, project manager at RF/SISU and program director of the sports leadership and management program.

Leadership, Management, and HR

The course on leadership, employer responsibilities, and HR is designed for those who want to develop themselves and their organization and become better employers. It also provides insight into the unique challenges of working and leading in a nonprofit organization.

In the nonprofit sector in general—and perhaps in sports in particular—broader HR knowledge is limited and often given low priority. Many managers become overly involved in day-to-day operations and athletic activities, which leaves little room to actively apply labor law and HR principles in their day-to-day leadership. Opportunities for professional development are also scarce.

This course is designed for those of you who, in your work or role, lead others in some capacity. You likely hold a leadership position within the sports community, such as secretary general, HR manager, sports director, or similar. You may also be a manager in another civil society organization. The course lasts two days. Theory and practice are interwoven with new knowledge, the identification of success factors, and independent work. The course is conducted in collaboration with the employers’ alliance.

Purpose

To equip leaders in the sports sector and civil society, to strengthen values-based leadership, and to increase knowledge of current labor laws and appropriate HR strategies.

Who is this program for?

You work as a manager in the sports movement or another nonprofit organization. You may hold a leadership role in a specialized sports federation, a district, or a larger club. This means you manage an office or organization with at least a couple of employees. When you register, you’ll fill out a short form describing, among other things, your leadership context, challenges, and expectations for the course.

Here's what you'll get

  • After completing the course, you’ll find it easier to see the connection between labor law, HR work, and leadership, and to apply this knowledge in practice.
  • A better understanding of the differences and challenges involved in leading in the nonprofit sector compared to leadership in the private sector and the public sector.
  • Refresher training on the division of roles between civil servants and elected officials.
  • Meet specialists in the field.
  • The ability to apply and make active decisions regarding your own leadership and challenges related to labor law.
  • Gain a better understanding of values-based leadership and how to apply it in your daily life.

Prerequisites

It’s helpful if you have some prior knowledge of being an employer. Feel free to visit the employer alliance’s website and watch the videos on “things to consider before terminating an employee” and “misconduct.”

The employers' alliance

The employer alliance is the employers’ organization that represents the sports sector. Here, leaders and managers in the nonprofit sector receive assistance with employment-related issues and support to develop in their roles as employers. We believe that strong leadership and knowledgeable managers create the right conditions for being a good and attractive employer.

Meals and Lodging

Meals and lodging are included in the course fee. Even if you live in the Stockholm area, we recommend staying overnight at Bosön, as the program includes both evening and morning sessions.

Additional Information

The course takes place over two days and includes time for sharing experiences and personal reflection, in addition to simply acquiring new knowledge. A common thread runs through the course, covering the three areas of leadership, employer responsibilities, and HR, as well as how to apply these three areas in your unique context. In addition to being part of the target audience, motivation and active participation are key requirements for taking part.

Cost

7,950 kronor, including one night’s lodging with full board and course materials. Cancellations made less than 4 weeks before the course starts will be charged the full fee. A doctor’s note is required in case of illness.
